Could some one please tell me what the big deal is with Pro-Life? What is their almost pathological fear of a woman’s right to choose? Do you realize the population of the planet has doubled since 1939? We went from 3 billion people then to over 7 billion now.
That’s pretty impressive when you consider we had several new wars and diseases in the past 60 years.
Then you have more than just abortion as a form of birth control. We have a veritable buffet of contraceptives to choose from. Ya got the pill the patch the morning after pill the IUD the female condom the male condom, foam etc. Then with in each of these you have sub categories based on color, taste, size and comfort you name it they got it. It’s a cornucopia of contraception if you will. Yet, with all that the planets population is still growing.
Think about Los Angeles. It has a population of around 17 million people. Aliens could come down one night and kidnap a million people for anal probing and you would still be stuck in a traffic jam on the 405 the next day.
We aren’t even looking at the fact that some form of population control has been around since the beginning of time. Some by mother nature like famine, natural catastrophes, disease and some by society. I can think of some recorded instances dating back as far as the Greeks of planned abortions. And yet as a species here we are today.
In short the irrational fear of birth control being the doom of man kind just doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. My apologies to the Pope.
Of course you get the emotional almost childish arguments for Pro-Life, the “If your parents had an abortion you wouldn’t be here”. Or “You are unique as a person”.
True, but then again if my parents had aborted me, I wouldn’t know it so I doubt I would care. As for being “Unique” I doubt any of us are that special genetically speaking. We all know some one that has a look like. We also have run into several people that you could swear thought the same way and had a similar personality. Lets face it with over 7 Billion people running around, statistical odds are good there is at least another one of you some place if not two.
Pro Life is also a bit short sighted in that at some point the ecosystem can’t support every one on the planet in a healthy way. In their attempt to make man prosperous and prolific they may in fact be dooming it in the long run.
Many studies suggest that for every one alive today to exist with the same standard of living as we have in the US you would need roughly 6 more Earths. We are already seeing the detrimental effects of this on the environment as third world nations are trying to industrialize and creating more pollution.
Some suggest the lack of resources will eventually lead to the long predicted wars between the “have and the have nots”. Some would even argue that the current state of world affairs is but the first shot in that war.
Then ya have the religious arguments. It’s a mortal sin. You’re going to burn in hell.
“Every sperm is sacred every sperm is great every sperm that’s wasted makes God quite irate.” Thank you Monty Python.
Fair enough. It’s a sin. But isn’t one of the fundamental gifts of God “free will”? Yes it may be sin but isn’t it some ones right as an adult to decide if they are going to burn for all eternity? It would seem to me that’s your God given right.
Not to mention that what’s a mortal sin today may not be in a hundred years. Gods “will” isn’t so much an absolute as it is a really cool suggestion depending on societal norms and church dogma at the time.
That’s my real beef with Pro-Life is that they take an absolutist view point on abortion. All abortion period is wrong. Their view totally negates the concept of free will. With Pro-Choice if you don’t want an abortion…don’t. If you do knock your self out.
